The Complete Guide to Pond Liners in Australia

A pond liner is the waterproof membrane that holds water in your pond, waterfall, or water feature. It sits between the excavated ground and the water itself, and it's the single most important component in any pond build. Get the liner right and your pond will hold water reliably for decades. Get it wrong and you'll be digging it up.

At Aquascape Australia, we've been supplying pond liners to Australian DIY builders, landscapers, and Certified Aquascape Contractors since 2008. We're the exclusive Australian distributor of Elevate™ EPDM pond liners, the same trusted product that pond professionals have specified for over forty years, manufactured by Holcim and previously sold under the Firestone brand. We're not a multi-brand reseller, we're the people who hold the manufacturer relationship, build with the product, and back the warranty. Below is everything you need to know to choose, size, install, and maintain a pond liner that lasts.

What is an EPDM Pond Liner?

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a synthetic rubber engineered for long-term outdoor exposure. EPDM pond liners are flexible rubber sheets, typically 0.80mm to 1.14mm thick, that can stretch up to three hundred percent of their original size, mould around irregular shapes, and resist UV, ozone, and temperature extremes. They're the industry standard for ponds, pondless waterfalls, recreation ponds, dams, and any water feature where a long service life matters.

EPDM is fish-safe and plant-safe when supplied as a true pond-grade product. Never use roofing-grade EPDM, which contains additives that are toxic to aquatic life.

Why EPDM is the Right Choice for Australian Ponds

Australia's climate is harder on pond liners than most. UV intensity here is higher than in Europe or the US north, summer surface temperatures on exposed liner can exceed 60°C from Brisbane through Perth, and many regions cycle through long dry periods followed by heavy rain. Our liner range is specifically tested for Australian conditions, not engineered for cooler European or US northern climates and imported as-is.

  • UV-stable. Formulated for continuous outdoor exposure. Real-world service life regularly exceeds 40 years.
  • Temperature-tolerant. Remains flexible from below freezing to well above 50°C, so it doesn't go brittle in a Sunshine Coast summer or crack through a Canberra winter.
  • Highly flexible. Stretches around rocks, gravel shelves, planting pockets, and curved edges without thinning at stress points.
  • Puncture-resistant. The rubber's elasticity lets it deform around sharp objects rather than tearing through.
  • Safe for fish and plants. No plasticisers or biocides that leach into the water.

PVC liners are cheaper upfront but stiffen with age, are more vulnerable to UV damage in Australian conditions, and typically carry a 10-year warranty. PondGard™ EPDM carries a 25-year warranty, and PondEasy™ EPDM carries a 10-year warranty. For any pond you want to keep for the long haul, EPDM is the answer.

For most Australian builds, the question isn't whether to use EPDM, it's which Elevate grade fits the project. Our EPDM vs PVC pond liner guide goes deeper.

Which Liner Thickness Do You Need?

Liner thickness drives durability, but thicker isn't always better. It's heavier, more expensive, and can be harder to fold into tight contours.

  • 0.80mm (PondEasy). Small decorative ponds, mini ponds, bog filters, container water gardens, patio features. 10-year warranty.
  • 1.14mm (PondGard). Most residential ecosystem ponds, pondless waterfalls, koi ponds, recreation and swim ponds, commercial water features, dams, lakes, and any heavy-duty application. 25-year warranty.

How to Calculate Pond Liner Size

Use this formula to work out the minimum sheet size for any rectangular or irregular pond:

Liner length = pond length + (2 x maximum depth) + (2 x edge overlap)

Liner width = pond width + (2 x maximum depth) + (2 x edge overlap)

Edge overlap should be at least 30 cm on each side, more if your pond has a flexible perimeter or sits in soft soil. Always round up to the next standard roll width to avoid mid-project seams. For a worked example and an interactive calculator, see our pond and pondless calculators and our step-by-step pond liner sizing guide.

Available Elevate roll widths: 3 m, 4.5 m, 6 m, 7.62 m, 9 m, 12 m, 15 m. Lengths up to roll capacity, with on-site joining for larger projects.

Pond Liner Underlay: Don't Skip It

Underlay sits between the soil and your EPDM liner and protects against punctures from roots, sharp stones, and ground settlement. It also extends liner life by buffering temperature swings.

Underlay is also recommended above the liner when installing rock and pebbles inside the pond, to protect the liner from damage during placement and over time.

We supply:

  • 270gsm geotextile underlay. 2 m and 6 m widths, cut to size or as 2 m x 150 m rolls. The standard underlay for residential and most commercial ponds.
  • 500gsm Rock Pad. Heavier protection where you're placing large landscape rocks directly on the liner, common in ecosystem ponds and waterfall builds.

Joining and Repairing EPDM Pond Liner

EPDM is joined on-site using a primer-and-tape system, not glue. The process is reliable, fast, and creates a seam stronger than the liner itself when done correctly.

The Elevate joining system uses:

  • QuickPrime Plus. Cleans and activates the EPDM surface so the tape bonds chemically.
  • QuickSeam Splice Tape. A 75mm self-adhesive EPDM tape applied across the join.
  • QuickScrubber tool. Applies the primer evenly.

For tears or punctures during or after installation, the same products patch the membrane permanently. Full walkthrough in our pond liner joining and repair guide.

How to Install an EPDM Pond Liner (Overview)

  • Excavate to your final pond shape with shelves for plants and rocks. Remove all sharp stones, roots, and debris from the hole.
  • Lay underlay across the full pond and over the edges. Overlap sheets by 100mm.
  • Unfold the EPDM liner into the pond on a warm day, when the rubber is far easier to work with because it's soft. Centre it before pressing into the contours.
  • Press into shape working from the bottom outward. Fold the corners neatly rather than trying to stretch them out.
  • Add underlay over the liner for added protection when installing rock and gravel inside the pond.
  • Start filling slowly to settle the liner into place. Adjust folds as the water rises.
  • Trim and finish the edges once full. Leave at least 30 cm of overlap around the perimeter, then fold the liner back against the back of your edging rocks and backfill with soil to hold it in place before covering with mulch and gravel. The aim is to lock the liner edge in place and shield it from UV.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best pond liner for Australian conditions?

EPDM rubber pond liner is the standard recommendation for Australian climates. Elevate PondGard 1.14mm is the most widely specified for residential and commercial pond builds. PondEasy 0.80mm suits smaller decorative ponds. Both handle UV, temperature extremes, and rockwork better than PVC or other alternatives.

Is Elevate the same as the Firestone pond liner I used to buy?

Yes. The Elevate PondGard and PondEasy product range is the EPDM pond liner formerly sold under the Firestone brand. Manufacturing transferred to Holcim, the product specification is unchanged, and warranty terms continue under Elevate (PondGard 25 years, PondEasy 10 years). Aquascape Australia is the exclusive Australian distributor.

How long does an EPDM pond liner last?

PondGard EPDM carries a 25-year warranty. PondEasy EPDM carries a 10-year warranty. Real-world service life regularly exceeds these figures when the liner is correctly installed with underlay and the edges are shielded from direct UV.

Is EPDM pond liner safe for fish?

Yes, provided it is supplied as pond-grade EPDM. Both Elevate PondEasy and PondGard are pond-grade and fish-safe. Never use roofing-grade EPDM in a pond. It contains additives that are toxic to aquatic life.

Can I join two pieces of EPDM pond liner together?

Yes, on-site, using QuickPrime Plus primer and QuickSeam Splice Tape. The seam is permanent and stronger than the liner itself when applied correctly.

Do I need underlay under my pond liner?

Yes. Underlay protects the liner from punctures and significantly extends its service life. 270gsm geotextile is the standard. 500gsm Rock Pad is recommended under heavy landscape rocks. Underlay is also recommended above the liner when installing rock and pebbles inside the pond.

What thickness pond liner do I need for a koi pond?

For koi ponds, Elevate PondGard 1.14mm is the standard. The thicker membrane provides margin for the larger pond depth, water volume, and the rockwork most koi ponds incorporate, and carries a 25-year warranty.

Can I install an EPDM pond liner myself?

Yes. EPDM is the most DIY-friendly pond liner because of its flexibility. For larger projects involving on-site joins, recreation ponds, or commercial installations, a Certified Aquascape Contractor will save time and avoid costly mistakes.
