Pond Liner Thickness Explained: 0.80mm and 1.14mm EPDM

Thickness is the single most important spec on a pond liner, after the material type. It determines durability, puncture resistance, weight, warranty length, and price. Get the thickness right and your liner will outlast the pond. Get it wrong and you'll either over-spend or end up with leaks.

Elevate™ EPDM pond liner is available in two thicknesses in Australia, 0.80mm (PondEasy™) and 1.14mm (PondGard™). Here's exactly what each one is for and how to choose.

Quick Summary: Which Thickness for Which Build

Note: this table reflects the current product range. PondGard is supplied in 1.14mm only, with the previous 1.02mm grade discontinued. Both PondEasy and PondGard are rated for use under rockwork.

Pond type Recommended thickness Why
Mini pond, patio pond, under 1,000 L 0.80mm (PondEasy) Lightweight, easy to handle, cost-effective
Small decorative pond, 1,000 to 5,000 L 0.80mm (PondEasy) Entry-level EPDM, 10-year warranty
Ecosystem pond with rockwork 1.14mm (PondGard) 25-year warranty, mainstream pro spec
Pondless™ waterfall 1.14mm (PondGard) Handles point loads, long expected life
Koi pond 1.14mm (PondGard) Deeper water, longer expected life, 25-year warranty
Recreation pond, swim pond 1.14mm (PondGard) Foot traffic, maximum durability
Commercial water feature, dam, lake 1.14mm (PondGard) Heavy duty, long warranty, professional spec

Understanding Pond Liner Thickness Units

Pond liner thickness is sold in both metric (millimetres) and imperial (mils). The two systems overlap as follows:

  • 0.80mm = approximately 30 mil
  • 1.14mm = approximately 45 mil

Australian product listings use millimetres. American product literature you might encounter often uses mils. Both refer to the same physical thicknesses.

0.80mm EPDM Pond Liner (PondEasy)

0.80mm is the entry-level EPDM thickness, sold in our range as Elevate PondEasy with a 10-year warranty. It's the same EPDM rubber compound as PondGard, just made into a thinner sheet, and it is rated for use under rockwork on smaller residential builds.

Best for:

  • Mini ponds and patio water features
  • Small decorative ponds under 5,000 L
  • Bog filters and wetland edges
  • Container water gardens
  • Backup or top-up basins
  • DIY backyard ponds, including builds with rockwork

Step up to PondGard for:

  • Recreation ponds and natural swim ponds
  • Commercial water features, dams, and lakes
  • Foot traffic applications
  • Builds where the longer 25-year warranty matters

PondEasy carries the same fish-safe rating and UV resistance as PondGard. The difference is warranty length (10 years versus 25), thickness, and the heavier-duty applications PondGard is rated for.

1.14mm EPDM Pond Liner (PondGard, 45 mil)

1.14mm PondGard is the heavy-duty professional thickness with a 25-year warranty. It's our recommendation for any serious pond build, ecosystem pond, pondless waterfall, residential or commercial koi pond, recreation pond, swim pond, and any project where the rebuild cost would be punishing if the liner failed.

Best for:

  • Standard residential ecosystem ponds
  • Pondless waterfalls and streams
  • Residential and show-grade koi ponds
  • Large recreation ponds and natural swim ponds
  • Commercial water features
  • Retention ponds and rain gardens
  • Dams and farm ponds
  • Aquaculture ponds
  • Lakes and large evaporation features
  • Any application with heavy rockwork or foot traffic

Trade-offs:

  • Heavier than 0.80mm. Need more hands to position on large builds.
  • Higher price per square metre than PondEasy.
  • Harder to fold around tight contours on small builds (rarely an issue at the project sizes this thickness suits).

Does Thickness Affect Lifespan?

Not as dramatically as you might think, but yes.

Both Elevate EPDM thicknesses use the same rubber compound. The difference in real-world lifespan comes mainly from puncture risk and stress tolerance, not from the membrane itself ageing faster or slower. PondGard's 25-year warranty reflects its higher load tolerance, PondEasy's 10-year warranty reflects its entry-level positioning.

In practice:

  • 0.80mm PondEasy: 25 to 35+ years in low-stress installs
  • 1.14mm PondGard: 40 to 50+ years in standard installs, more in protected conditions

These are real-world figures, not warranty-period figures. The warranties (25 years on PondGard, 10 years on PondEasy) are the manufacturer's commercial guarantees, not measures of how long the liner will actually last.

Does Thickness Affect Fish Safety?

No. Both Elevate pond-grade EPDM thicknesses are fish-safe and plant-safe. Thickness doesn't change the underlying material's safety rating.

Does Thickness Affect Joining?

Both Elevate thicknesses use the same QuickPrime Plus and QuickSeam Splice Tape system, but joining different thicknesses to each other isn't recommended. Stick to one thickness per pond, even when joining sheets.

How Much Does Thicker Liner Actually Cost?

The price difference between PondEasy 0.80mm and PondGard 1.14mm is roughly 25 to 30% per square metre. In real terms, on a typical residential pond, that's the difference between perhaps $400 and $550 in liner. Against a total build cost of several thousand dollars including excavation, rocks, plants, pumps, and filtration, the thickness upgrade is one of the smallest line items in the project.

For any project intended as permanent, the marginal cost of going up to PondGard is almost always worth it, particularly when the 25-year warranty is part of the equation.

Choosing the Right Thickness: The Decision Tree

Use this quick logic:

  • Will the pond have foot traffic, be used as a swim pond, or be a commercial feature? If yes, choose PondGard 1.14mm. If no, continue.
  • Is the pond a residential koi pond, ecosystem pond, or pondless waterfall? If yes, choose PondGard 1.14mm for the 25-year warranty. If no, continue.
  • Is the pond under 5,000 L and primarily decorative? If yes, PondEasy 0.80mm is the cost-effective choice. If no, default to PondGard 1.14mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness pond liner do I need for a koi pond?

1.14mm EPDM (Elevate PondGard) with a 25-year warranty. Koi ponds are deeper and longer-lived than decorative ponds, and the extra thickness provides the margin needed for decades of trouble-free service.

Is 0.80mm pond liner thick enough for a fish pond?

For small to medium decorative fish ponds, yes. PondEasy 0.80mm is rated for use under rockwork on smaller residential builds. For larger or higher-stress builds, step up to PondGard 1.14mm.

What's 45 mil pond liner?

45 mil is the imperial equivalent of 1.14mm, the thickness of Elevate PondGard EPDM. American product literature often uses mils, Australian listings use millimetres. Both refer to the same physical thickness.

Is thicker pond liner always better?

Not always. Thicker is harder to handle on small ponds and harder to fold around tight contours. Match the spec to the build.

Does pond liner thickness affect water quality?

No. Thickness doesn't influence the chemistry of the water. Both Elevate EPDM thicknesses are pond-grade and inert.

Can I use a thinner liner if I have heavy underlay?

Not as a substitute. Underlay protects against punctures from below, but thickness drives the liner's tolerance for stress, rocks, and foot traffic from above.

How thick is roofing EPDM compared to pond EPDM?

Roofing EPDM is typically 1.14mm or thicker, similar to PondGard. But never use roofing EPDM in a pond. It contains additives toxic to fish, regardless of thickness.
