How to Calculate Pond Liner Size: The Formula, Worked Examples, and Common Mistakes
Buying a pond liner that's too small is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make on a pond build. Buying one that's too big is wasteful but recoverable. The right size avoids both.
This guide shows you exactly how to calculate the pond liner size you need, with the formula we use on every install at Aquascape Australia, two worked examples, and the most common mistakes to avoid.
The Pond Liner Size Formula
For any rectangular or irregular pond, use this formula:
Liner length = pond length + (2 x maximum depth) + (2 x edge overlap)
Liner width = pond width + (2 x maximum depth) + (2 x edge overlap)
Three components:
- Pond length and width. The footprint of the pond at ground level, measured at the widest points.
- Maximum depth. The deepest point of the pond. The liner has to go down one side, across the bottom, and back up the other side, so you need 2x the depth on each axis.
- Edge overlap. The amount of liner that extends beyond the pond edge for anchoring and edge construction. Minimum 30 cm each side. Use 50 cm for irregularly shaped ponds or soft soil.
Worked Example 1: A Simple Rectangular Pond
Let's size the liner for a pond that's 3 m long, 2 m wide, and 0.8 m at its deepest point. We'll use a 30 cm (0.3 m) edge overlap.
Liner length = 3 + (2 x 0.8) + (2 x 0.3) = 3 + 1.6 + 0.6 = 5.2 m
Liner width = 2 + (2 x 0.8) + (2 x 0.3) = 2 + 1.6 + 0.6 = 4.2 m
So this pond needs a liner of at least 5.2 m x 4.2 m. The next standard Elevate™ roll width up from 4.2 m is 4.5 m, so the order would be cut to size 4.5 m wide x 5.2 m long, giving a small safety margin on the width and exactly the right length.
Worked Example 2: A Deeper Koi Pond
Koi ponds are typically deeper than ecosystem ponds. Let's size a koi pond that's 4 m long, 3 m wide, and 1.2 m deep, with a 50 cm overlap because the build includes substantial perimeter rockwork.
Liner length = 4 + (2 x 1.2) + (2 x 0.5) = 4 + 2.4 + 1.0 = 7.4 m
Liner width = 3 + (2 x 1.2) + (2 x 0.5) = 3 + 2.4 + 1.0 = 6.4 m
Liner of at least 7.4 m x 6.4 m. Round up to a 9 m wide roll cut to 7.4 m length, or to a 6 m wide roll joined to a 0.4 m strip for the extra width. For builds requiring on-site joining, our pond liner joining and repair guide walks through the process.
Sizing Irregular Ponds
For kidney-shaped, freeform, or asymmetrical ponds, the formula still works, you just use the maximum dimensions in each direction.
- Measure the longest point of the pond from one edge to the other. That's your length.
- Measure the widest point at 90 degrees to the length. That's your width.
- Add the standard 2x depth and 2x overlap to both.
Free-form ponds usually justify a larger overlap (50 cm or more) because the irregular perimeter is harder to anchor reliably with less material.
Available Elevate Roll Widths
Elevate EPDM pond liners are available in the following roll widths:
- 3 m
- 4.5 m
- 6 m
- 7.62 m
- 9 m
- 12 m
- 15 m
Lengths are cut from the roll to your specification. For projects that exceed a single roll's dimensions in any direction, on-site joining with QuickPrime Plus and QuickSeam Splice Tape produces a permanent waterproof seam.
Always round up to the next available roll width. The small extra cost is much cheaper than the alternative of running short.
Cut to Size vs Pre-Cut Packs vs Full Rolls
Aquascape Australia offers Elevate liner in three formats:
- Cut to size per lineal metre. Best for custom pond dimensions. Order exactly what you need to the centimetre.
- Pre-cut packs. Common pond-build sizes, ready to go. Slightly cheaper per square metre than cut to size on equivalent dimensions.
- Full rolls. Best for large commercial builds, multiple-pond projects, or contractors stocking inventory. Best per-square-metre price.
Common Sizing Mistakes
- Forgetting to multiply depth by 2. The liner has to cover both sides of the hole, not just one.
- Skipping the overlap. You need overhang to anchor the liner. 30 cm minimum, 50 cm preferred.
- Measuring at the wrong points. Use ground-level dimensions, not the dimensions of the bottom of the pond.
- Underestimating depth. Measure to the lowest point of the floor, not the average depth.
- Forgetting shelves count too. If your pond has shelves at multiple heights, the depth used in the formula is still the deepest point. The shelves are accommodated by the liner's natural slack.
- Ordering exact size with no margin. Always round up to the next roll width and add at least 10 cm to the calculated length. Tiny errors stack up during installation.
Sizing for Pondless™ Waterfalls and Streams
Pondless waterfalls and streams use the same formula, treating the full course of the stream as the pond shape.
For streams, measure each section separately:
- Stream channel length and width
- Maximum depth (usually shallower than a pond, often 200 to 400 mm)
- Add overlap on all sides as you would for a pond
For the waterfall reservoir or basin, treat that as a separate pond and size accordingly. Many pondless builds join multiple liner sections to follow the route.
Quick-Reference Sizing Table
Approximate liner sizes for common pond dimensions with 0.8 m depth and 30 cm overlap:
| Pond size (L x W) | Pond depth | Minimum liner size | Recommended roll width |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 m x 1.5 m | 0.6 m | 3.8 m x 3.3 m | 3 m or 4.5 m |
| 3 m x 2 m | 0.8 m | 5.2 m x 4.2 m | 4.5 m |
| 4 m x 3 m | 0.8 m | 6.2 m x 5.2 m | 6 m |
| 5 m x 3 m | 1.0 m | 7.6 m x 5.6 m | 6 m or 9 m |
| 6 m x 4 m | 1.2 m | 9.0 m x 7.0 m | 9 m |
| 8 m x 5 m | 1.2 m | 11.0 m x 8.0 m | 12 m, or join 6m + 3m |
These figures assume 30 cm overlap. Add to them for larger overlaps or unusual shapes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate pond liner size for a kidney-shaped pond?
Use the same formula but measure the maximum length and maximum width at right angles. Use a slightly larger overlap (50 cm) to account for the irregular perimeter.
How much overhang should a pond liner have?
Minimum 30 cm beyond the pond edge on all sides. For ponds in soft soil or with unusual perimeter shapes, use 50 cm. The overhang folds back behind your edging rocks and gives you room to construct the edging.
Can I make a pond liner smaller after installation?
Yes, you can trim the overhang with a sharp utility knife. Cut along the line of your edging, leaving enough to fold back behind the rocks and bury under soil and mulch.
What if I need a bigger liner than the largest roll?
Join two or more sheets on-site using QuickPrime Plus primer and QuickSeam Splice Tape. The seam is permanent and stronger than the parent material.
Does the formula change for pondless waterfalls?
No, same formula. Treat the stream channel as the length and width, and apply the standard depth and overlap calculation.
Should I round up or round down when ordering?
Always round up to the next available roll width. The small extra cost is much cheaper than the alternative of running short during installation.
Do I need a different size for the underlay?
Underlay matches the liner size or just slightly smaller. It should cover everywhere the liner sits inside the excavation plus the first 100 to 150 mm of edge.
