How do you keep fish food out of your pond filter?
When it comes to how to keep fish food out of your filter, there are a few techniques you can adopt. Firstly, it’s important to use a high-quality fish food that doesn’t break apart quickly during feeding.
Only put in what your fish will eat
Overfeeding can be bad news for your fish and for your pond’s ecosystem. Leftover fish food can end up becoming waste for algae to feed on or infiltrate your filtration system! As such, you should only put in as much as your fish will consume within three minutes. It can also be a good idea to do smaller feeds more frequently. With our Premium Fish Food Pellets, it’s recommended that you feed your fish up to three times a day.
Place food in the same spot each time
Fish are surprisingly good learners and will quickly learn where their food comes in. Placing the fish food in the same spot within the pond each time can help your fish find their food faster. We also recommend you use a measuring scoop or other feeding device to get the same amount of fish food out each time. The amount you need to place into your pond will differ depending on the type, size, and number of fish you have, but you will soon learn the right amount of food needed.
For our pellets, the pond water temperature should be a minimum of 15°C before feeding. They should be stored at room temperature in a spot indoors, and of course, out of reach of children!
