We only recommend the use of Surf Mud sunscreen when swimming in your Recreation Ponds to prevent destabilising the natural bacteria filtration system. In fact most sunscreens contain antibacterial preservatives, which in a closed system Recreation Pond, can build up and destroy the beneficial bacteria that these bodies of water depend on to stay clear and clean. Oil is generally used as a carrier in most lotions and these are also detrimental to aquatic ecologies
The Haereticus Environmental Labatory have compiled a list of chemicals and attributes in personal care products (e.g., sunscreen lotions and sprays) that are found in a number of different aquatic and marine ecosystems that can have a detrimental effect on their existence. They call this list of chemicals and physical-attributes the “HEL LIST.
